When do sats tests start?
Teachers often begin initial assessments from Janauary onwards to give children plenty
of time to get used to handling the paper test booklets and understanding what the test paper is asking. Some teachers however
wait until April as the actual sats exams start in May. The whole country takes them at the same time. International schools
abroad have to wait until after all the UK children have taken their sats test papers before they are able to take them.
During April you may hear your child tell you that they were taken out of the classroom
into small groups for past sats papers to be completed. This is to give the teacher a good idea of the ability and level that
your child may achieve and also for them to assess their reading ability for the reading test that takes place during sats
week. It also helps them monitor how your child re-acts to the papers, prevents any copying and allows the teacher to answer
questions that may arise from individual children. In May there are sats test papers/examinations in Reading comprehension,
spelling, mathematics and Science. There is also a writing task.
Please do not worry too much as your child will pick
up on this and cause them unnecessary stress. Even if you find your child does not perform on the day as well as you had hoped
it is not going to cause them too many problems going ahead. The really important examinations at school do not take place
until they are sixteen, their GCSE's. Sats examinations give you a guide to your child's ability in a subject compared to
others in the UK. The results may be used at secondary level if your child is in year 6 for the sats examinations to
group them into ability sets, so for this purpose they are important. Also if your child may be going into a private school
at secondary level the school will ask to see what your child's results were for their year 6, sats. However children in year
2 that are doing sats will not be affected by this and the sats test papers here will give you a guide to their strenghts
and weaknesses and their ability compared to others in the UK.
Key stage one, your child is in this stage if they are in year 2 or below. At the
end of key stage one your child will take their first sats examinations. These take place whilst they are in year 2.
Key stage two, your child will take their sats examinations at the end of this
year, so when they are in year 6.
