Get your boiler serviced According to Churchill many
homeowners do not have their central heating boiler serviced before the onset of winter and are therefore likely to incur
expensive repair bills and be without heat during the time that they most need it. They found that 42% of those they surveyed
did not have their boilers serviced and 38% never bled their radiators. Churchill encourages homeowners to also check that
their loft insulation was at least four inches thick. AA moving into central heating and boiler insurance cover British Gas and
Homeserve have now a competitor with the AA who now have central heating insurance and boiler insurance for people looking
for cover over the winter. Cover will cost around £155 but if you are an AA member then you get a discount off your
boiler cover. The AA will also service your boiler for an annual charge which again AA roadside members receive a discount
for. The AA will not have their own central heating boiler contractors they will use qualified tradesmen to ensure a fast
response time.
Homeserve Richard Harpin set up Homeserve in 1993. He
recently sold some of his shares and has made 66 million pounds and still holds onto a large number of shares worth over 100
million pounds. 2.8 million households have taken out Homeserves central heating insurance. Tesco also plans to get into the
central heating and boiler cover insurance market in the near future.
Do be aware that companies offering central
heating insurance often start by offering you reaonably priced premiums but these do creep up, often to above £500 a
year. In the small print you could find that certain areas are not covered so that even if your central heating breaks down
there is possiblity you will not be insured.
Do you need boiler cover?
Chris Eagle, product director at Energychoices.co.uk
has said if a boiler breaks down or needs replacing it can result in an ‘incredibly expensive’ repair bill for
people. “Boiler cover can offer homeowners peace of mind their central heating system will be repaired quickly,
without costing a packet,”

Prevent flooding if you go away over Christmas and the winter holiday.
Esure
have advised people to leave their central heating ticking over but to turn off the stop cock. This will stop burst pipes
from flooding your house. You cannot do this with combi boilers as they require water pressure but they do have a winter safe
mode that you can switch to. Esure has calculated that burst pipes that occur 3 or 4 days after you have left home cause more
damage and expensive repairs than burst river damage. Attic or loft pipes burst caused by freezing and then thawing and this
type of damage brings ceilings down. If your boiler allows you to turn off the stop cock do so and leave the heating to come
on during the day and night. Also open up your loft hatch to allow warm air to reach those pipes. Also open doors under
the sink to allow air flow to these pipes. If you do have a frozen pipe use warm towels to thaw, nothing too hot. Be gentle
and slow. Turn off your outside taps and think about taking out home emergency cover as offered by Protect Your Bubble.
Most people do not have boiler cover insurance
Surprisingly most people do not have the necessary
boiler insurance cover and this has been highlighted by a recent survey. "According to a study by price
comparison website uSwitch, 58 per cent do not have cover, despite more than a fifth of households suffering a broken down
boiler last year.
The average cost of repairing a boiler is £320, the website revealed, making any failure
potentially costly.
It added that almost half of Britons - 48 per cent - see boiler cover as an unnecessary expense.
Meanwhile, one in five of those planning to take it out this year are doing so because they faced a large bill when
their boiler broke down and they now believe that cover works out cheaper than paying for repairs.
Kevin Sears,
energy expert at uSwitch.com, says: "As household budgets continue to be squeezed, consumers may be tempted to make savings
wherever they can.
"However, going without boiler cover could leave you strapped for cash if your boiler packs
up and you don't have the money spare to pay for repairs," he added." http://www.myfinances.co.uk/insurance/2011/09/26/uswitch-urges-householders-to-buy-boiler-cover
Repairs for a boiler and a boiler parts are so expensive that boiler insurance in colder countries such as the
UK do make financial sense. Most insurance policies will also include an annual service which can help prevent breakdowns.
Remember the winter of 2010? You would not have wanted a boiler breaking down during those sub zero temperatures that went
on for several weeks.Boiler cover usually comes under a bronze, silver and gold package. If you go for the more expensive
gold package then you will find that your hot water tank will be covered with some insurance companies whereas with the bronze
package it may not. You need to look at how old your boiler is, how old your water tank is, and figure out how much a burst
pipe, a leaking hot water tank might cost you. The gold package with British Gas costs over £300 per year.
