Is it cheaper to take out annual travel insurance or a few single? If you are travelling more than twice a year then it is cheaper to take out annual travel insurance. It has the added benefit of meaning that you won't forget to take it out which according to a recent survey by Ryanair is something that a huge number of us Brits do.

Over a third of British holidaymakers fail to purchase travel insurance before going away, new research suggests.

The discovery was made by budget airline Ryanair, which carried out a survey of 4,000 passengers.

Its research revealed that 46% of respondents had annual or multi-trip travel insurance, while 19% had bought single-trip cover.

However, the remainder of respondents had failed to compare travel insurance deals and buy any cover before setting off.

The survey also found that the vast majority of people who had gone to the trouble of buying travel insurance (82%) did not know whether they were covered for skiing, business travel or sports such as golf.

Meanwhile, 90% of uninsured travellers did not realise that medical repatriation flights back to the UK could cost them several thousands of pounds.

Stephen McNamara, a spokesman for Ryanair, urged passengers to purchase a travel insurance policy "that best suits their needs".

He added that people who buy insurance "travel safe in the knowledge their holiday, their possessions and their health is covered".

A recent survey by Post Office Travel Insurance found that just one in four people planning an extended gap year had purchased a specialist policy, while only two-fifths of those with a specific gap year policy had read the terms and conditions to see what cover they had.ADNFCR-2196-ID-800744029-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR

By taking out annual travel insurance you can not only save money but it can save you time as it is one less thing to think about before you travel. If you forget your travel insurance and you have an accident or suffer an illness then you could end up in a dire financial situation, particularly if somewhere outside of Europe. In Europe you would be covered for a short time for an accident but anything that required you to be flown back to the UK would not be covered. Nor are those minor illnesses, ear infections, chest infections, that require a quick visit to a GP. Travel insurance isn't expensive and this is one insurance that we recommend you do take out before travelling abroad.
